Curses ! My evil plan to have 100 pages of CD reviews Foiled Again !

Anyway

CD club selections from last week

CD 1 is Rough Trade Counter Culture 2007 This is a double CD of mostly indie music. Not as good as the 25 years of Rough Trade but not bad.

CD 2 is John Peel Tribute album. A double CD of favourite music of the late lamented Radio 1 DJ. Many of the usual suspects are here including Teenage Kicks by the Undertones and tracks by Joy Division, New Order and the Smiths. Wonderful.

CD 3 is Retro by New Order. This is a box set of 4 CDs that has been curated. One CD is Pop ie the singles, one is a fan's choice, one is club mixes and the fourth is Live. There is a bonus CD as well. The Pop CD was cracked so would not play. The rest did. If you like New Order you will ove this. I rediscovered an instrumental track called Elegia which is just beautiful.

The CD club selections this week are

CD 1 is Resistance by Muse. If you like Muse you'll like this.

CD 2 is Let's Change the World with Music by Prefab Sprout
This is the follow up to Jordon the Comeback but was never released. And that was 17 years ago. This is more of an album concerned with the spiritual effect of God in music. Unexpected and quite good and vastly different from other work by the band.

CD 3 is The End by Black Eyed Peas Other than the singles it is really meh.

CD club selections this week are

Mika - The Boy Who Knew Too Much
Light frothy and fun

Richard Hawley - Truelove's Gutter
I chose other works by him from the CD club before and have yet to be disappointed.

Massive Attack Collected Gift Pack This is two CDs and a DVD. The first Cd is the singles, the second is rareities and the DVD is the videos of the singles.
One great thing about this apart from the classic singles Safe from Harm and Unfinished Sympathy is finding something good that is good that you are forgotten. Teardrop which has vocals by Liz Fraser of the Cocteau Twins. Bliss.

The CD club selections this week are

CD 1 is Move On - The Best of Crosby Stills and Nash Not that good.

CD 2 is Sigh No More by Mumford and Sons This is more or less acoustic but nice.

CD 3 is In This Light and On This Evening by Editors This was very good. I had borrowed the previous album and this is an evolution from that.

The CD club was on hiatus due to half term.

The last two selections were

CD 1 Brand New Eyes by Paramore which I liked quite a bit.

CD 2 Bruce Springsteen and E Street Band Greatest Hits which is absolutely wonderful. The problem here is not what to include but what to leave out. Born to Run and Dancing in the Dark are included as are two live bonus tracks that Bruce wrote but which were recorded by other artists, Because the Night which was a hit for Patty Smith and Fire which was a hit for the Pointer Sisters.

The CD club was absent or one week so I had longer to enjoy

The 59 Sound by the Gaslight Anthem Indie sort of style and nice

The Duckworth Lewis Method This is partly Neil Hannon otherwise known as the Divine Comedy. This is a heavily accented album towards cricket. You could call it a concept album. It is a good listen

Simon and Garfunkel The Complete Collection This is all five of their Sixties albums and the Concert in Central Park DVD. Absolutely wonderful. The Bridge Over Troubnled Water album contains many of their well known tracks like El Condor Pasa, Cecilia and the title track. Straight onto the buying list.

Man from another time by Seasick Steve The latest from Seasick Steve is a wonderful album. I liked the previous ones so I liked this. Really good and cheerful.

Aerial by Kate Bush A double album from 2005. Her usual ethereal vocals but guest vocals by Rolf Harris. Genius.

The last week selections from the CD club are as follows

Odditorium by the Dandy Warhols I have other works by them and so got this one to listen to. Not bad.

Horehound by the Dead Weather Disappointing.

Fossil Fuel- the singles of XTC 1977 to 1992 A double CD with the first one being better than the second. What I did not know is that The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead was their song not Crash Test Dummies.

Them Crooked Vultures Disappointing again. John Paul Jones of Led Zepplin, Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age and Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters.

Reality killed the Video Star by Robbie Williams I really liked this. It is very pleasent.

The CD club through the Christmas break was as follows

Music of the Year 1967 by various artists, Music of the Year 1968 by various artists and Music of the Year 1969 by various artists
these contain some all time classics particularlyfrom Motown. Lovely.

Rough Trade shops Counter Culture 8 This is a double CD of music from 2008 like Friendly Fires. Very good.

Rough Trade Indiepop 09 Similar to the above but only 1 CD and not so good.

The Killers Live from the Royal Albert Hall If you like the Killers then you will like this. Has 'Human' , 'Mr Brightside' and 'All the things that I have done'

Also played a double Christmas CD of music like Slade, Wizzard etc, the Scary Solstice and Very Scary Solstice CDs and Red Hot Chilli Peppers Live in Hyde Park which is very good.

The CD club selections from the last week were

No more shall we Part by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds Nice and gloomy including 'God is in the House'

Turn it Up by Pixie Lott Bright and Poppy.

Secret, Profane and Sugarcane by Elvis Costello A mostly acoustic album. Very nice.

Bob Dylan: No Direction Home the film soundtrack Technically not a film soundtrack as it has Dylan tracks that have really not been released or heard before this album except in two cases. If you like Dylan then you will like this.

Last week from the CD club we had

Best of Depeche Mode which covers their career and is very good.

New Order the Singles A double CD of all their singles. Again very good

Dreamboats and Petticoats 2Late 50s and early 60s rock and roll. Fabulous. Again a double CD

Acolyte by Delphic This is new indie stuff and just did not engage me at all.

Contra by Vampire Weekend I did not like their first CD. This one I did. It was really quite appealing. It was not absolutely must be material but it was good.

Strangely Strange but Oddly Normal This is a 3 CD set of artists signed to Island records in the years 1967 to 1962. Some of it is quite surreal. But there are a couple of well known tracks like Cat Stevens doing Wide World. If you are looking for something different or esoteric then this may be for you.

Last week from the CD club we had

The Betrayed by the Lost Prophets Indie. and enjoyable

Veckatimest by Grizzly Bear Hard to describe but again enjoyable.

The Fame Monster by Lady GaGa Alright stop sniggering at the back. This is the Fame CD plus the 8 extra tracks on a seperate CD. It is very poppy and I can now see why it has sold so well. Very catchy.

End Times by The Eels Bleak and acoustic but really quite wonderful.

Just listened to Tina All the best, by Tina Turner and Fax it! Charge it! Don't ask me what's for dinner! by Four Bitchin' Babes. These are both older, but new to me.

Last week's CD club was

Danny and the Champions of the World who Bruce Springsteen likes. It's ok but it took me a couple of listens

Eels 1996 to 2006 If you are an Eels fan you should like this

Sixties Jukebox Classics A double CD of 60s music which obvioulsy does not have the Stones or the Beatles. Still good.

She Wolf - Shakira Not bad at all. There is something attractive in the way she sings in English and pronounces certain words.
